Wild mustangs sold at prison May 10
HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP)--Several hundred people are expected at the state prison in Hutchinson May 10.
The crowd is not a new batch of inmates--they're interested in adopting horses.
They'll be bidding May 10 on wild mustangs rounded up by the Bureau of Land Management, cared for and trained by inmates at the prison.
Prison spokesman Steve Schneider said the inmates break the horses and work with them until the animals are ready for adoption.
About 20 mustangs that have been saddle- and halter-trained will be for sale, as well as several untrained wild mustangs.
Bidding on saddle-trained horses starts at $300, and $150 for halter-trained.
BLM rounds up wild horses on public land in western states to control populations and contracts with entities such as the prison to hold the animals.
